Nine vessels only were registered

at Hongkong, and Forty-two Steam-launches and other vessels

with an aggregate tonnage of 7,634 tons were built during

1906, compared with Seventeen vessels registered and Forty-

-three Steam-launches and other vessels with an aggregate

tonnage of 3,695 tons built in 1905.

The number of cases tried in the

Marine Magistrate's Court, which had, for reasons explained

in the concluding paragraph of my Despatch last year,

temporarily increased, declined in 1906 to 27 cases with

44 defendants compared with 56 cases with 170 defendants

in 1904 and 75 cases with 338 defendants in 1905.

The new Harbour Office, occupying

a central position on the sea front, was completed in July

last, and now provides the accommodation necessary to deal

with the large and diversified business of the Port, which

was conspicuously lacking in the small and ill-placed

building formerly used for the purpose.
